Can you give me the benefit of your expertise, please?

I currently blog from home (and work), but with more and more commitments, I think I need a laptop set-up so that I can blog on the road, etc...

I was at Best Buy the other night, and there were some computers, small lap tops that were under 500 dollars. I don't know if that is a good deal... beyond the low price, that is.

Note that I won't really use this computer for anythin beoynd blogging, email, and some 'net surfing.

Someone tell me what I should get, knowing that my needs are few.

Thanks!

GF

Thats a great deal GF! I got an ACER this year. Cheap, bottom of the line ( purchased with a work bonus ) It was 360.00. I spent another 30 on memory to bring it to 2gig to run Vista. Its been a little workhorse. Does everything but burn DVDs ( CDs only ) but can at least play them. I all but ditched the desktop. Im never in the office anymore. Always on the couch, in the kitchen. Very liberating!!! Best money spent!

First of all, DO IT. :-) I'd guess you'll use it twice as much as a desktop - and not just on the road. We have about 5 laptops currently in our house (WHAT!?!). A BestBuy-employee & PC shop veteran told me recently that Toshibas are known (among IT regulars) for being "lighter weight and better for the road / jiggling -- that they're a good solution for companies who want something that will last." >>> Be sure you get a 64-bit processor. There are still some 32-bit Compaqs around (priced to move...). Bad idea. >>> If you can get XP, don't get Vista. XP was built on the W2k kernel; Vista's built on the Win98 kernel (WinME), and these have been problems all along. >>> I've had gateways & HP's & been happy with both. Either of these will come with a lot of "Crap-ware" (software designed to get you to buy something) that you'll probably want to remove. There is "De-Crap-ifier" software out there - run it on a new PC and (akin to anti-virus ware) it uses definitions to figure out all the stuff to get off. 30-day trials, games that take you online & eventually ask for $, etc etc. http://www.google.com/search?q=crapware >>>> Pay attention to System Back-up DVDs. These used to come with computers, but these days they don't. If you're not careful, a year from now you'll have a need for a restoration DVD & learn it's a big headache. You may need to pay $30 for them at time of purchase, but I'd do it.

I took the plunge on a Gateway laptop this past Friday... it does EVERYthing I need it to do... It is wi-fi capable, it can play and burn CD's or DVD's, it has plenty of memory and speed, I spent just under $600. Woo Hoo!

I got a Toshiba last Christmas but it was around $800. I loved it. That is until my husband bought himself a new Toshiba and I loved his even more. Needless to say, he got my old (5 months at the time) one and I swiped the new one. We bought our daughter an HP for about $600 and it has been a good first laptop for her. She uses it for blogging and school work. Pretty basic stuff. I will suggest getting something with XP instead of Vista but I think that Dell is the only one still putting XP on their machines. Of course, now, Wal-Mart is selling Dell computers.
