The first mercantile store was built by H.D. Gruene in 1878 to serve the local cotton farmers and travelers who passed through the area. Later, the store was moved across the street in the Gruene Antique Store building. Gruene Hall, a bar and dance hall, was built in the 1880’s and soon became the social center for the community. It still stands at the end of Hunter Road and the intersection of Gruene Road. It is oldest dance hall in Texas and many country-singing stars and legends have performed there over the years. Willie Nelson, George Strait, Jerry Jeff Walker, Lyle Lovett are some of the well-known singers. A complete list of the singers is displayed inside the hall. Gruene is pronounced "green". German immigrants established the village before 1850. It is now part of New Braunfels, Texas. Historic structures, both ruins and restored, include old homes, stores, an art gallery, a winery, and an ice cream parlor. Gruene Hall, a rustic beer hall, circa 1880, is still popular for weekend dances. Quaint shops in historic Gruene, Texas buildings are plentiful. Gruene shopping attracts many visitors. The Guadalupe River provides excellent water recreation for visitors. Gruene,Texas is an ideal launching spot for inner tubes, rafts, and canoe trips down the Guadalupe. Ernst Gruene and his wife Antoinette, German immigrants, were the first to settle in 1845 in what is now known as Gruene. When his son Henry Gruene returned from a long trail ride with enough money to buy the farm from Ernst, he moved into Antoinette's Cottage until he married and built what is today Gruene Mansion Inn, one of the best B&Bs in Texas. Henry Gruene built a number of houses and planted the surrounding land with the number one cash crop at that time - cotton. Next came the first Mercantile Store in 1878, a cotton gin powered by the Guadalupe River, and a new dance hall (Gruene Hall) which became the center of the communities' social life. In 1974, most of the Gruene estate was sold and new businesses were established. Today Gruene is a thriving community and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
