I was just sitting here, doing my daily "Stumble Upon" journey, when I noticed a car was stopped outside my window (in the turn lane) with a police car behind....blue lights flashing.
I am thinking - boy I bet that person just knows that every single person they have ever met will roll by this intersection just because they got stopped by the police. I expected this to be just another 30-second transaction.....
But no....here comes another police car - lights flashing - and this is a very large cop! He goes and talks to the first cop...to the driver...then the first cop gets back out of his car and joins the second one talking to the driver. And then.....from the other direction....comes a THIRD police car.....also lights a flashing. The third cop gets out, checks the front of the stopped car, then talks to the driver.
Now...the driver gets out of the car...a guy all dressed in black....he talks a lot - one imagines he is also loud, for his gestures are vehement. Now he is told to go and lean against the first police car....while cop#3 opens the driver door, and commences to search the driver's area - and now the back seat. Must be a lot of stuff in the back seat, he's flipping papers and all kinds of stuff back there.
Now....the trunk is opened - and the cop starts going through everything in there....this is like a silent movie...where you can only guess the true action and motives. Cop #1 has something in his hands - small paper - is asking the driver about it - keeping his distance. Now all three cops are gathered next t the driver, like they are waiting for something....
Cop #1 - with the paper, gets back into his car....to call about what he has found? Cop #2 joins him, then back out to stand next to Cop #2. What on earth did they hear about this car that escalated this from traffic stop to a multiple car stop?
The driver is getting a bit agitated, moving around, gesturing and talking angrily - Cop #3 raises his hands, as if to say 'what did you expect?' Interesting. Cop#2 is back talking with Cop #1 in the car - Cop #3 is keeping an eye on the driver, who is still leaning against police car #1.
Now a confab at the police car - all three cops talking - and now Cop #1 goes back to talk to the driver again. The driver is listening - shaking his head - disagreeing with whatever Cop #1 is saying. Now Cop #2 joins in, with hand gestures, making his points, one by one.....
Now all the cops are back at the car - the driver has been invited back to see whatever Cop #1 has brought up on his computer in the car? Cops #2 and #3 are right behind him. The driver bends down inside the car....gestures more, making motions that he has nothing to hide....look at me....here I am...you get what you see.
Now the driver angrily goes back to his car....slams down the trunk and gets back inside his car. The Cops are all still talking back by police car #1. The driver waits - door open - to see what happens next. The Cops all talk, looking forward at the driver, as if deciding what to do now. Cop #2 goes back to the driver - looks like he is writing him a ticket, or writing down information - but then stops....goes back to the police car and leans inside. All the Cops are now crouched down by the police car - looking intently at whatever is inside. The driver is in his car, rubbing his head, grabbing the steering wheel, very nervous.
Cop #2 goes back to the driver - more conversation...more gestures, small ones on the part of Cop #2, larger ones from the driver, who is now sitting sideways in the driver's seat, feet on the ground outside the car. The conversation seems to be going nowhere.... Cop #2 goes back, checks the rear door, or rear tire of the car.. now hands on hips, talking to the driver. Cop #1 joins him at the car, they get the driver out of the car, turn him around and handcuff him! Cop #3 joins them. They walk the driver back to police car #1, and search him. The driver stands quietly while Cop #1 does this, then they put him in the back seat.
Cop #2 is now in police car #1, then gets out, and the three Cops have another conference by the police car. They seem to be in no hurry to be done. What are they going to do with the car sitting there in the road? Tow it, I imagine.
Cop #3 gets back in his police car, and the other two Cops join him at the window - more talk. Cars are going by....slowing way down, gawking. Passers by doing the same thing. The driver is hunched down in the back seat of the police car.
Cop #1 goes back to the driver's car, gets in...going through what's on the seat, in the glove box. Leans outside the car, looking at something he's found. Cop #3 has left the scene. Cop #1 is writing down what he has seen in the driver's car - goes back to talk with Cop #2, who is now back in his car. Cop #1 returns to his car, gets in....and they all sit.... Cop #1 now pulls out, taking his prisoner with him, and Cop #2 moves up into the spot just vacated....waiting for the tow truck, maybe?
An unexpected drama for a Saturday morning in our quiet little neighborhood....you just never know....
